I’m asked by almost all of my Brides “Do I really need a videographer”. My answer is always, no, you don’t need a videographer, but YES you do need a Cinematographer!! Whats the difference? Theres a HUGE difference in my opinion. A Cinematic Videographer will create a video that tells the amazing story of your day, shot, lit, and edited beautifully. Your video will look like the real deal, like it should be playing in a movie theatre! Cinematic videographers capture your day in the most unobtrusive way, slinking into the background capturing everything as it happens. They use multiple cameras, and multiple camera angles stashed all over your ceremony and reception site. Ive worked with quite a few Brides and Grooms who decide last minute to add a videographer, a lot of times they use left over funds, etc. I always tell my sweet Brides that its so important to truley invest in your videographer, just like you have your photographer. By investing in a fantastic videographer, you only enhance your investment with me! Great cinematic videographers work one on one with photographers, to make sure they stay out of each others way, to make sure every single moment and angle is captured in both photos and in video. We work as a team, there for you all, to make sure every single second of your day is beautifully documented.
I’ve worked with some incredible cinematic videographers and I can recomeend so many, one of my dear sweet friends, Christina, owner of In Motion Video Productions, took some time out of her day to answer a few questions for me so that I could better explain to my Brides just how important it is to invest in your videographer.
What is Wedding Cinematography (vs Wedding Videography)?
Cinematography refers to the more artistic approach of capturing your wedding day. At In Motion we consider ourselves Cinematographers because we are trained in story telling and capturing your day in a creative, and cinematic way. Forget the old cheesy wedding video your parents had. Those days are gone, and Wedding Cinematography has developed into a beautiful art form.
Do I really need Photographer AND a Cinematographer?
YES! Photographers and Cinematographers capture all the important moments of your wedding day in different ways. In some moments, one still frame of an image is so powerful it can bring tears to your eyes. In other moments, it’s the words from your new spouse, your family, or just the raw candid moments captured that will be the most memorable. Both Photography and Cinematography are worth the investment and will help you re-live your day in different ways.
Why is investing in a quality Cinematographer so important?
2 Reasons: First, if you do not invest in a quality Cinematographer, you may end up with a video that looks like it came out of the ‘80s (and nobody wants that!) But second, and more importantly, your Cinematographer (and your photographer) will be with you the majority of your wedding day. If you do not hire a professional, you could end up with someone who misses some important moments, or worse yet, someone who is intrusive and gets in everyone’s way. This in turn will directly affect the investment you have made on your photography. The bottom line is, if you have an intrusive and overbearing videographer, you will not only be uncomfortable, but you could risk causing your photographer to miss out on some of the most memorable shots.
What if I’m camera shy? I don’t want cameras in my face all day?
Advances in technology now allow us to carry very small cameras that shoot in High Definition, are great in low light, and produce a beautiful sharp image. This allows us to be very discreet. You will not feel like there is a large camera in your face all day, we rarely need to use additional lighting, and your guests won’t notice us either. We often get the comment from our couples at the end of the day that they barely noticed we were there. This is very important, as you should feel comfortable enough to just relax and be yourselves, so we can capture some beautiful natural moments.
Is it really important for my Cinematographer and my Photographer to get along?
Yes! It’s not even so important that they have met or have worked together in the past (although that helps!) But it’s most important that both are professionals with the same goals in mind, which is to capture the most beautiful imagery possible for you. As cinematographers, we may give some direction to you, but we mostly leave that up to your photographer. Our goal is to remain discreet and capture the most natural moments we can. Those in the end, are the most emotional, and most memorable.
