The B. Family – Jacksonville Lifestyle Photographer

I knocked on their door. Nervous, but so overwhelmingly excited. For some reason I could feel in my bones this interview was about to change my life. The door opened, I walked inside, and was immediately greeted by a toddler. She was 2 years old, and running towards me, as fast as her little chubby legs could take her, and wrapped her arms around my knees. All I could make out was the mop of curls on her head. She had me. Right then at that moment. I would do whatever I could in my power to make this child happy. I had to get this job. I had had other nannying jobs, but this was going to be a constant steady job. Every Tuesday and Thursday for as long as they needed someone. I was praying that someone was me. I felt at home, right away. This little angels parents were amazing. Hard working, strong, and put their family first. When they called later that week to tell me the job was mine if I wanted it I was over the moon. How more perfect could this get! An incredible family AND a preciously adorable 2 year old, what a great job to work while I was away at college. Only problem? It wasnt a job. From the moment that little girl walked into my life it wasnt just a job. I lived to spend time with that little Miss. I would sneak her Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal (because she may or may not have always been allowed…sorry Eve!!) just to see her giggle and clap with excitement in the morning when I pulled it out of my backpack. We made weekley trips to the duck pond, we sang songs at the top of our lungs while driving with the windows down because she loved the way the wind felt. I let her kick off her shoes and socks even though we’d just have to put them back on in 5 minutes while we were driving because she liked it, and because I loved how cute her little feet looked in the carseat swinging back and forth. I let her splash in puddles, I took her to the mall just to walk through the Disney store, we did cooking projects because she loved them so much. No matter how messy and complicated. I took her to the library at least twice a week, just because I loved how she’d make me sit on the floor, pull a book from the shelf, then back herself into my lap so I could read to her. Not only was I falling completley and madly in love with this child, I was also falling in love with her parents. They were incredible to watch. Mabry’s Dad was putting himself thorugh Med school, working in a research lab, studying like crazy and still found all the time he could to spend with his family, Mabry’s Mom was working hard as a professor, writing and getting publised in law journals and other publications, and never missed time with Mabry. They were fantastic role models. They taught me so much about life and love. They were my family, still are, whether they like it or not. So, when I graduated from UF I was devestated, but at least Mabs only lived an hour and a half from me. We continued to see each other as much as possible. Mabry coming to stay with me alot over the weekends. I loved watching her turn into this incredible young lady.

When Mabrys parents told me they were moving to Nebraska a few years back I was heartbroken. So this trip up to visit them in Nebraska was just about the greatest thing Ive done in a long time. Mabrys almost a teenager, well not officially, but just about. Shes so grown up. Smart, kind, sweet, and still has the amazing heart that she had at 2 years old. This family is still something that I can just never get over. They are best friends. They remind me so much of my parents and I. It was always just the three of us, just like its always just the three of them. I had the best time spending the weekend there, getting connected again, laughing hysterically over their stories, watching Mabry at a CHEERLEADING competition (if you all know me, you know this is just about the greatest thing to happen to me ever, Mabry Cheerleading). Watching the amazing woman shes becoming, and realizing that she hadn’t forgotten about me. The only thing that had really changed was that I couldnt just pick her up and give her hugs and kisses like I used to. There was still lots of hugs, I’m sure much to Mabrys embarassment ;-) Being there with Mabs at this point in our lives I realized I had learned so much from her. How to love a child like they were my own, even though they weren’t. How to make a little girl laugh, how to make her happy, how to make her feel safe and loved. I learned so much about children, what they needed and when they needed it. All of which led me to this line of work. I started my business because I missed being around kids. Missed those little hugs and sticky fingers. This family helped make me who I am today. B. Family, I am so so grateful to have you all in my life. I miss you all so much I just can’t stand it. Love you all.

So lucky to love what I do…

jacksonville wedding photographer, st augustine wedding photographer, the knot best of 2012 winner, the know, jacksonville wedding, wedding photographer, destination wedding photographer, jacksonville engagement photographer, jacksonville engagement session, jacksonville wedding, published wedding photographer

I am so incredibly lucky to do what I do. Alot of people say that, I know. This is literally a dream come true for me. For those of you just stopping in, and who maybe don’t know my story, I worked in Corporate America as an Event Planner for years and years. I loved events, but the crush that is Corporate America was killing me. Suffocating. Stifling. Like 4 walls of pressure closing in on my creative mind. Every day I woke up, parked in a parking lot, trudged across the street like everyone else. Sat in a cube 8-10 hours a day. Attended meeting after meeting, planned tradeshow after tradeshow. Ordered logo’d pens, notepads and golf balls. I remember thinking, this can’t be all there is.

I loved photography. Like thousands of others out there. I tossed around the idea of starting a little business but quickly pushed it to the back of my mind. Who would want me to take photos of their children? Their Wedding day? Please. What a laugh. Who would trust me to capture the most important moments of their lives, to hold their new babies before most of their family members. HA. Who would do that? I remember sitting in my room at night, setting my alarm clock for 630am for another day at the office, in the cube, and thinking, what if? What if someone would let me do all the above. To trust me to bring my camera into their most important times. If they would, I would be forever grateful. I would be honored. I would hug them and tell them thank you for trusting me. Thank you for allowing me to live my life the way I want to live it. To be passionate about what I do. To truly love and adore all of my clients. To never take for granted what I am doing, The power my camera holds, or the emotion that they allow me to see. I took a leap. Begged, I mean asked to photograph peoples children, newborns, pets. I photographed everything that walked in front of my camera. I followed amazing wedding photographers around their own weddings, capturing loves stories beside them. Learned my gear, attended workshops. Blindly throwing all of my heart and soul out there on the internet along with my images and words. People started asking me to photograph their children. Emails from incredible Brides asking me to please document their wedding day. Brides choosing their wedding date simply because it was a date I had open on my calendar. Brides, who weren’t technically Brides yet, but knew rings were just around the corner asking me to hold their date for them until the big proposal happened. Former Brides emailing me, before most of their families even knew, to tell me they were expecting and to save the date for their newborn and family sessions. It was simply, a dream come true. Not a second goes by that I don’t realize that.

I woke up today with a letter in my email box. A letter from The Knot telling me I had been chosen as a “Best of Wedding Pick” for 2012. This is a very big deal in my world. I remember flipping through The Knot Magazine and seeing those photographers names. Thinking, Wow, what beautiful memories these photographers have witnessed, what amazing service they must have provided for their clients. Today my business name will be listed amongst those photographers. I have worked for the past, almost 4 years, trying to build my business. But I have never seen it as a “Business”. I see it as relationships. Every single client is a relationship. I have never had 10,000 Facebook fans, or offered contest after contest like a lot of other photographers out there. I don’t pay thousands of dollars to magazines just so they will publish my weddings, or run my ads. I never wanted to run a business like that. I wanted relationships. I wanted Brides to come to me saying, my Best Friend/Cousin/Sister In Law/Co Worker used you to photograph her moment, and I want to also. I am so incredibly lucky to have all these wonderful clients in my life. I actually don’t even love to use the word client. It’s too cold. It’s to Corporate America. I prefer to call them friends.”My newborns, My kiddoes, and My Brides”. I take ownership of them. Simply because it’s up to me to make their moments last. My Brides that have taken the time to write reviews, incredibly sweet reviews that every time bring tears to my eyes. Why? Because it shows me that everything I wanted has come true. I wanted to give Brides images that they would treasure forever, that their grandchildren would flip through years down the road and smile at the love their Grandparents shared. I wanted them to trust me to photograph the most important day of their lives. To capture every moment. To even capture moments they didn’t know happened! I wanted them to welcome me into their lives, so that I could document every second of their day, as an old friend. Someone who gets them, their love, and the importance of their Wedding Day. I never wanted Brides to find me because of an Ad I placed. I wanted them to find me from their hearts, and from the hearts of others in their lives.

Not a day goes by when I don’t wake up thankful. Thankful for my career, thankful for my job that allows me to be me, that allows me to be creative, and loving, and kind to others. Work that allows me to meet incredible people who have changed my life and affected me in more ways than I could ever imagine. Thankful that I can laugh and giggle with my clients, watch hugs and kisses happen between couples and families. Peek in on what makes them who they are. What makes them fit. Thankful that I have made “My Brides” happy. That I have given them moments to physically hold onto, to enlarge, to frame around their homes, to turn into canvases to display on their living room walls. I have never just wanted to take a photo. I have wanted so much more than that. I wanted life, experiences, relationships, hugs from two year olds, kind words from Brides and Grooms. I have wanted to follow my heart, and all of you have made that possible. Thank you. Thank you for allowing me to do what I love.

And they lived happily ever after - Jenn

Why a blog suddenly isn’t very important…

Last night I was up at 4 am, stressing for the millionth time over my blog. I was having a panic attack thinking about how many images I have to resize and reupload to get this little blog back up and running, on top of all the sessions I have to edit, the wedding albums I have to lay out, the Bride meetings I need to attend. I feel asleep after much tossing and turning at the huge to do list running through my bed. When I woke up, I checked my email, and saw a Caring Bridge update on one of my Sweet Friends, Laura. Laura has been, basically, in the hospital for almost a year, battling a disease called hypoplastic myelodysplastic sydrome (MDS). It came on suddenly last fall, and Laura has been kicking its you know what for the past 10 months. A few months ago I popped in to visit with Laura and her family, and decided to bring my camera along. I knew Laura was about to go through her biggest battle to date, a bone marrow transplant. A transplant that could be her cure, but also start a whole new fight as her body would decide whether or not to fight that marrow or accept it. I wanted to document the amazing love that flows between her, and her husband Matt. They have this amazing spark between them. Their love is full of sass, lots of wit, lots of banter, and a passion that you can see from across the room. They’ve been fighting this battle together. Even when Matt was forced to wear a mask so as to keep his germs to himself. I hear he’s had to start placing a towel between his lips and Laura’s forhead so that he can still give her the love and affection he wants, and again, still keep his germs to himself. Laura has been unbelievably strong over these past few months. Her facebook wall is full of sassy little comments about blood draws, IV’s, and the endless barrage of medicines and pills. I wanted to make sure that during Laura’s hospital stays and having to be away from Matt, that she could remember through these images what good, healthy, happy times look like. So she could get back to them as soon as possible.

Why am I writing this post now you ask? Well, this morning, as I woke up to attack my giant to do list of items to clean up what I thought was the worst possible thing that could happen, my blog crashing. The first email in my inbox was Lauras update. It seems, Laura is at a giant crossroads with her battle of MDS. She’s fighting a big bad infection and frankly, I wanted to blog because I need your help. I completley believe in the power of sweet thoughts and words of encouragement. So, sweet blog readers, Im asking for prayers, words of encouragement, sweet words to get Laura through this hard time and to let her know there are so many people out there thinking of her. Feel free to leave blog comments for this sweet, incredible, smart, wise, strong woman and her amazing family and friends.

Lola, I loved you before I knew you simply because I consider the G. Family my own. So, like it or not, when you became a part of it, I instantly claimed you as well. Fight hard sweet girl. The world is a better place with you in it and I know that there are hundreds of people out there cheering you along, with little pennants that say “GO LAURA”. I’m one of your biggest fans.

Theres a giant comment section below that I would love to see full of sweet words and encouragement for my Amazing friend. Whether you know her personally or not.  I know you won’t let me down ;-)

Standby – Minor Technical Difficulties

Hello my sweet blog readers. It’s taken me a while to be able to write this because, well, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Last week I got the worst email an avid blogger like me could get. “Your blogs been hacked”. Don’t get me wrong. I am an avid backer-upper. You have to be in this business. Images are taken from my camera, downloaded on to my hard drive, and external hard drive, then triple backed up on a 3rd external hard drive. No one however, ever mentioned that you had to back up a blog! I assumed that since it was on the internet, everything I have ever posted, images, blog posts about my beautiful brides, and incredibly sweet families, would always be out there in internet never never land. Well, guess what happens when you assume folks. After a few days of crying and total devastation, mourning over a blog full of amazing memories, amazing images, and sweet client comments, my amazing blog designers over at Flosites were able to resurrect my blog from the abyss that is the internet. One glitch, they were able to get back all the words I’ve ever written, but not 10 months of images. So, internet, if you’re looking for images of weddings and newborns and families, engaged couples or published weddings please, please head over to my website at http://www.jennhopkinsphotography.com/. I will be, over the next few months, slowly trying to restore all the images that I have posted here along the way. Please stand by as I refill all the gaping holes in the blog, as well as update new blog posts.

I also want to take this time to tell all of you out there how amazing you were. I had Grooms emailing me with amazing tips and tricks on how to get back everything I’d lost, Brides asking tech gurus from their places of employment to help me out, I had blog readers from all over the U.S. finding what they could for me in their google readers and sending it to me to help me repopulate my blog. This tells me one thing. That I have incredible blog readers, and clients, and that I have been able to get across in my words just how important my clients, their images, and their memories are to me. Never have I been more aware of just what this blog means to me. It’s not just a place to post sneak peeks, or sessions, or important news. Its more than that. It’s a place where I go to write. Write about how my heart feels when I hold a newborn baby. How my heart feels when I see a newly engaged couple giggle at each other, a man and woman officially pronounced Husband and Wife, and how my heart feels full every single time I photograph someone.

So stay tuned sweet readers. One day I will get this baby back up and running.

And they lived happily ever after - Jenn
